What we collect, why, and what we do with it — in plain language.
Last updated August 14, 2026
The short version
Ventriloquism.org is a reference site about the art of ventriloquism. The only personal information we hold is what ventriloquists choose to send us through our submission form, so that we can build and check a page about them. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for their own marketing.
What we collect
Only what you type into the submission form. Nothing is required except your name, your email address, and permission to publish. Depending on what you fill in, that can include:
- Name, other names you have worked under, and email address
- A mobile phone number — optional, and only if you provide one
- City, country, website and social links
- Your account of your career, figures, influences, teachers and students
- Photographs and video links you choose to upload or share
- Which permission boxes you ticked, and the browser user-agent of the submission
We do not run advertising trackers and we do not sell data about readers.
Asking the archive a question
The Ask the Archive page lets you put a question to our historian. What you type is sent to our own server and on to Anthropic, whose model writes the reply out of records held in this archive. We do not attach your name to it, we do not build a profile from it, and we do not use it for advertising.
Your question is not stored alongside any identity. Your network address is held only in memory, and only long enough to stop one visitor flooding the service. Nothing about a question survives on our side once the answer is returned.
You do not have to use it. Email info@ventriloquism.org instead and nothing is sent anywhere.
Why we have it, and what we do with it
- To write and fact-check your page. That is the whole point of the form.
- To contact you about it — questions while it is being written, and a note when it goes live — if you gave permission.
- To send news and updates about Ventriloquism.org, if you ticked that box. You can unsubscribe from any email, at any time.
- To send occasional text messages, only if you gave a mobile number and separately ticked the text box. See below.
What gets published: if you give publishing permission, the material you send is used on a public page about you, edited for length and clarity. Your email address and phone number are never published.
Text messages
Consent to texts is separate from consent to email, and neither is required to submit anything or to have a page.
- You must be 18 years of age or older to use this SMS service.
- Two kinds of message, each with its own consent: transactional messages and alerts about your own submission, and promotional messages carrying news and announcements.
- Message frequency varies, and is occasional — this is not a daily or automated alert service.
- Message and data rates may apply.
- Reply STOP to any message to stop receiving them. Reply HELP, or email info@ventriloquism.org, for help.
- We do not sell mobile numbers, and neither your number nor your SMS consent is shared with third parties — except the providers who actually deliver the messages on our behalf.
- Consent to texts about your profile and consent to news and announcements are separate, and neither is required for anything.
Who else touches the data
We use a small number of service providers to run the site. They process data on our instructions and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes:
- Cloudflare — hosting, plus the database and file storage that hold submissions and photographs
- GoHighLevel (LeadConnector) — the contact record used to reach you about your page and to send email or texts you have opted into
- Anthropic — writes the answer when you ask the archive a question, from records we supply; it receives your question and nothing identifying
- Resend — delivers the notification email that tells us a submission arrived
How we protect it
Reasonable technical and organizational measures, described honestly rather than in boilerplate:
- Everything travels encrypted. The whole site is served over HTTPS/TLS, so what you type into the form is encrypted in transit.
- Submissions sit in a private database. Records are held in Cloudflare D1 and are not publicly readable; there is no public endpoint that lists or exposes them.
- Photographs sit in private storage. Uploads go to a private Cloudflare R2 bucket, not a public folder. Only images we deliberately publish on a page become public.
- Credentials never reach the browser. The keys used to store submissions and sync contacts are held server-side as encrypted secrets and are not exposed in any page.
- Access is limited to the small number of people who actually build and check pages.
- We do not take payments on this site, so no card or bank details are ever collected or stored.
- Data minimization. Nothing is required beyond a name, an email address and publishing permission — every other field is yours to leave blank.
No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you ever believe your information has been exposed, email info@ventriloquism.org and we will investigate.
How long we keep it
Submissions are kept as long as the page exists, because they are the sourcing for it — a reference work needs to be able to show where a claim came from. Contact records are kept until you ask us to remove them.
Your choices
Email info@ventriloquism.org and we will act on any of these:
- See what we hold about you
- Correct anything wrong — corrections are genuinely welcome
- Delete your information, or take your page down
- Stop email, stop texts, or both
Children
The submission form is intended for ventriloquists who are adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If a young performer's details reach us, a parent or guardian should contact us and we will remove them.
Changes
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top. Material changes to how we use contact details will be announced to the people affected.
